Play this: ‘Super Planet Crash’ tests your god mode
Sometimes, it’s easy to forget what a serendipitous marvel our universe really is. At least, until you’ve tried building your own. Super Planet Crash is a browser-based simulation that requires players to forge a planetary system capable of surviving at least 500 years. The interface is simple: left-click to place up to 11 astronomical objects of varying sizes anywhere within the defined limits. What makes it challenging is how the gravitational field of each celestial body affects others around it. Even a single dwarf star can throw everything out of orbit.

The story of Cortana, Microsoft’s Siri killer
Technically, Cortana isn’t supposed to exist for at least another 500 years, but that’s not stopping Microsoft from bringing her to life this week. While Apple has Siri and Google has Google Now — both digital assistants that run on smartphones — Microsoft is taking an approach that mixes the best of the competition with its own unique take. Based on a 26th-century artificially intelligent character in the Halo video game series, Cortana will debut as part of Windows Phone 8.1, the next big update for Microsoft’s mobile operating system.

The future is here!

Processing Posters by JR Schmidt
I used Processing to generate these images. The script I wrote generates gravity fields based on user input and then spawns particles that draw and change color as they move across the canvas.

Microsoft’s Build Developer Conference is happening on Wednesday, and Microsoft’s recently appointed CEO Satya Nadella is expected to appear and deliver the company’s new direction to developers. Last year, former CEO Steve Ballmer announced that the company would rapidly iterate on Windows, starting with a free update to Windows 8.1. After a year of company reorganization and the ongoing acquisition of Nokia, next week’s Build conference may prove to be one of the most interesting in recent memory.

Catch up on Build 2013
